A World War I memorial unlike any other in the Midwest. The Rosedale Memorial Arch rises from a hilltop in Kansas City, Kansas — a 35-foot limestone replica of the Arc de Triomphe, dedicated on Armistice Day, November 11, 1923. What makes this monument remarkable is how it got here. It was not built by the government. The residents of Rosedale — a working-class neighborhood in KCK — raised every dollar themselves to honor their neighbors who served. It is one of only a handful of Arc de Triomphe replicas in the United States, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This vertical composition captures the arch in early spring, bare branches casting shadows across the limestone, an iron fence guarding the memorial plaques within.
